During the first quarter this year, Hunan operated 266 freight train trips via the China-Laos, China-Vietnam, and rail-sea intermodal transport services, increasing by 46.2% year on year, according to the data released by the Changsha Customs Authority. Among these, the number of China-Laos freight train trips rose 18.7% to 89 in total, ranking first among the central regions of China.
On April 23, the gantry cranes at Huaihua International Land Port were busy loading suitcases and bags, new energy vehicles, hardware tools and other exported products onto a China-Laos fixed-schedule freight train from Huaihua to Vientiane. This train pulled out of the port to its destination as scheduled on that day.
Regular operation of the international freight trains to ASEAN countries has accelerated Hunan's efforts in constructing the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. It has also pushed Huaihua to develop new industries and new business formats with modern logistics, suitcases and leather goods, and processing of agricultural products from ASEAN as the core.
"Our company has imported 11,000 tonnes of cassava starch from Southeast Asia via the China-Laos freight trains so far this year. We use cassava starch to produce products like bubble tea, accelerating the development of downstream processing industries," said Li Shaoming, manager of a local international trade company. Statistics showed that, Huaihua imported cassava starch worth 64.556 million CNY in the first quarter, marking a year-on-year increase of 81.6%.
Relying on cold-chain freight trains, tropical fruits such as durians, bananas, and longans from Southeast Asia can reach Huaihua within 48 hours. In the first quarter of this year, Huaihua imported 23.025 million CNY of Southeast Asian fruits, with durians accounting for more than half of the total. The stable operation schedule of the freight train service has helped control the fresh produce loss rate to not more than 5%.
Automobile exports have become a new highlight. In the first quarter, Hunan exported 20 vehicles via the international freight trains to ASEAN, including 10 new energy vehicles.
